Getting through identity verification once, at the right time
Verify before your first deposit, not after your first win: a licensed casino will not pay you until it knows who you are, and on most sites the know-your-customer check fires at the first withdrawal. It is the same paperwork either way, tied to the anti-money-laundering duties in the operator's licence — done early, it costs an evening while nothing is at stake.

The direct answer
A licensed casino will not pay you until it knows who you are, and that single obligation explains why a first withdrawal sits in review while your deposits went through instantly. Deposits carry no checks; payouts do. The process is know-your-customer verification, sitting on top of anti-money-laundering duties written into the operator's licence, and on most sites it fires at the first withdrawal request rather than at registration.
Which leads to the one piece of timing advice worth acting on first: verify before your first deposit, not after your first win. It is the same paperwork either way. Done early it costs an evening of admin while nothing is at stake; done late it costs that evening plus a review queue, plus the particular irritation of watching a balance you want sit behind an unread document.

What the operator is obliged to establish
Verification is not a customer-service preference and support cannot waive it. A gambling licence loads several duties onto the same file: confirm you are a real, identifiable person; confirm you are old enough to gamble where you live; screen you against sanctions lists; and monitor the account for the transaction patterns a regulator expects to be reported.
In Ontario those duties sit inside a registered framework — operators hold provincial registration and an agreement with the province's igaming body, and the standards are published rather than promised; our Ontario igaming guide covers what that framework reaches. Sites serving Canadians from outside it run on offshore licences of varying rigour, but almost none skip identity verification, because the banks and payment processors behind them insist on it even where a regulator is relaxed. The upshot is identical everywhere: no completed file, no payout.
The upload, and why it bounces
Three documents are standard and a fourth is now routine.
- Proof of identity. A government-issued photo document — passport, driver's licence, provincial photo card. Unexpired, with every corner inside the frame.
- Proof of address. A utility bill, bank statement or government letter carrying your name and the address on the account, dated inside the window the site states.
- Proof of payment instrument. A card image with the middle numbers masked and the cardholder name legible, a bank statement header, or a screenshot from your banking app showing the account holder's name.
- A liveness or selfie check. Usually automated: hold the document beside your face and follow the on-screen prompt.
Rejections are boring and predictable. A clipped corner fails automatically, because the checker reads the document border before anything else. Glare across a laminate hides the exact field being extracted. A photograph of a screen rather than of the document fails. An expired document fails even when the face plainly matches. And the commonest failure of all: the name on the payment instrument does not match the name on the account — a shared card, a shortened first name, a maiden name. Our Interac payments guide explains why casinos treat that mismatch as disqualifying rather than as a detail worth arguing about.
What each document is actually proving
Each upload answers one question, and a reviewer only ever checks a handful of fields on it.
| Document | The question it answers | What the reviewer zooms in on |
|---|---|---|
| Photo identity document | Are you a real person of legal age? | The expiry date, the full document border, the face against your selfie |
| Proof of address | Do you live where the account says you live? | The issue date, your name spelled as on the account, a complete street address |
| Payment instrument proof | Do you own the route the money takes? | The account holder name, and that it is not a third party |
| Selfie or liveness capture | Is the uploader the person on the document? | Movement, lighting, the document visible in the same frame |
Shoot flat, in daylight, on a plain surface, without flash. That one habit clears most of the column on the right.
Source-of-funds requests, and what sets them off
Enhanced due diligence is the second tier and the one that catches people off guard. It asks not who you are but where the money came from, and it is triggered by patterns rather than by suspicion of you personally: deposits that are large against the profile you gave at sign-up, a sudden change in deposit rhythm, funds arriving from an account in someone else's name, or cumulative turnover crossing a threshold the licence sets.
What gets requested is documentary — recent payslips, a bank statement showing salary landing, a notice of assessment, sale or inheritance paperwork. The bar is a plausible, evidenced account of the money, not a forensic audit of your finances.
Two honest notes. You can decline, but declining normally ends with the account closed and the balance returned to source, which is what the rules intend rather than a punishment. And a promotional balance changes nothing: bonus winnings sit behind the same checks as everything else, as our guide to casino bonuses sets out.
When a check stalls, and where the documents live afterwards
A stall is usually a failed document nobody told you about clearly. Start in the account message centre rather than live chat — the rejection reason is normally written there in the terms the reviewer used. Then ask one precise question in writing: which document failed, and on which criterion. Vague complaints get vague answers; a named field gets a named fix. If the file is complete and the wait runs past the timeframe in the terms, escalate through the operator's formal complaints procedure, keeping copies. A licensed site publishes that procedure alongside the dispute-resolution body or regulator it answers to, and the route exists for exactly this.
Your documents are personal information. Privacy law permits an operator dealing with Canadians to keep them only as long as the purpose requires, then demands secure disposal; anti-money-laundering rules pull the other way and mandate retention measured in years, so expect the files to be held and ask in writing under what policy. Upload through the account portal, never as an email or chat attachment. And leave your deposit limits where they are while you wait — a stalled payout is exactly when people talk themselves into a bigger session, and gambling already costs more than it returns over time. Our responsible gambling guide covers the tools every licensed site owes you.

Frequently asked questions
- Why can I deposit instantly but not withdraw?
- Deposits carry no verification duty; payouts do, because that is where the operator's anti-money-laundering obligations actually bite. The asymmetry is structural on every licensed site rather than a stalling tactic.
- Can I verify my account before depositing?
- On most sites yes, and it is the cheapest path there is. Register, open the verification or documents area, and upload before you fund anything — the same paperwork, with nothing at stake and no queue pressure behind it.
- Why was my document rejected when it looks fine?
- Automated checkers read edges and specific data fields, not your overall impression of the photo. A clipped corner, glare across the laminate, or a picture of a screen rather than the document will fail even when the document is genuine and current. Reshoot it flat, in daylight, with all four corners inside the frame.
- Do I have to answer a source-of-funds request?
- You can refuse, but a licensed operator will generally close the account and return the balance to source rather than release unverified funds. If you would rather not document your income to a gambling site, that is a legitimate position — reach it before depositing, not after a win.
