Baccarat rules: three bets and nothing else to decide

You make one decision before any card is dealt — bet on Player, Banker or a tie — and the dealer does the rest by fixed drawing rules, such as those in New Jersey's Rules of the Games. No technique to buy and no system to learn: baccarat's thinness is its most honest feature.

The direct answer

Baccarat — punto banco in its casino form — is a comparing game between two hands, Player and Banker. You do not play either hand. You bet on which will finish closer to nine, or on a tie, and the dealer does the rest by fixed rules. One decision, before any card is dealt; then you watch. That thinness is the game's most honest feature: no technique to buy, no system to learn, nobody selling the illusion of control.

Three bets, one decision

Every round offers the same three wagers:

  • Player — the Player hand finishes closer to nine; pays even money.
  • Banker — the Banker hand wins; pays even money minus a five percent commission on winning bets.
  • Tie — both hands finish equal; pays several times the stake.

The commission is not a penalty. The drawing rules give Banker a small structural advantage, and the house prices it in — our house-edge guide covers that arithmetic. The Tie is a separate bet with a generous-looking payout and a deserved reputation as the table's sucker bet.

How a hand is scored

Card values are simple; the only trick is that a total keeps its last digit only.

Cards Value
Ace 1
Two to nine Face value
Ten, jack, queen, king 0

Add the cards and drop the tens digit: a seven plus an eight totals fifteen, which counts as five. Nine is the best hand. A two-card eight or nine is a natural — when either hand shows one, no more cards are drawn.

No decisions, by design

After the first two cards, whether a third is dealt is settled by fixed drawing tables — the same tables printed in casino regulations such as New Jersey's rules of the games. Nobody decides anything: the Player hand acts on its total, the Banker hand reacts mechanically to the Player's draw. The shoe holds at least six decks. Said plainly: baccarat contains no skill, and the scoreboard's colour-coded streak displays are decoration — no pattern changes the next hand. Boring, yes. Also protective: a game with no decisions is a game with no wrong decisions.

Live tables, RNG baccarat, and the Canadian picture

Live-dealer baccarat streams a real table and shoe; RNG baccarat is software resolving the same fixed rules instantly. The math is identical — the difference is pace. Live tables deal slowly, which quietly protects a bankroll; RNG tables run a hand every few seconds, which does the opposite. For Canadian readers: Ontario runs a regulated igaming market where sites hold an AGCO registration and an agreement with iGaming Ontario; outside that framework, sites serving Canadians operate offshore under other licences. Either way, treat baccarat as entertainment with a known cost — set a limit before the first hand and stop when you reach it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Banker really the best bet?
It carries the smallest house edge of the three, even after the five percent commission — that is why the commission exists. Smallest is not small: no baccarat bet is ever in your favour.
Can you count cards or use a strategy in baccarat?
Counting has been studied and moves almost nothing, because there are no decisions to inform. Betting progressions only rearrange the same expected loss.
What is a natural?
A two-card eight or nine. When either hand is dealt one, the round ends at once — the drawing tables never come into play.
Does a tie lose my Player or Banker bet?
No — in standard punto banco those bets push and the stake returns. Only the separate Tie bet wins on a tie — the kindest thing to be said about it.
