Blackjack: the rules and the arithmetic underneath
Beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without going over: cards two to ten count face value, court cards 10, an ace 1 or 11, and a natural traditionally pays 3:2, per Bicycle's official rules. Played with correct basic strategy under favourable rules, the house edge is about 0.16% (Cornell's mathematics outreach); played by feel, it climbs.

The direct answer
Blackjack is the casino game where decisions matter: the goal is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Cards two through ten count face value, court cards count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11 at your choice — the flexibility that makes the game worth learning properly. Played by the standard rules with correct decisions, its house edge is among the lowest on the floor; played by feel, it quietly becomes a slot machine with extra steps.

The standard rules
The game uses a standard 52-card deck, commonly several of them shuffled together. The dealer draws to a fixed rule — standing on 17 in the classic form described by Bicycle's official rules — which means the dealer has no decisions at all. A natural blackjack — ace plus a ten-value card in your first two — traditionally pays 3:2; insurance, offered when the dealer shows an ace, pays 2:1 and remains a bad bet for a basic-strategy player in the long run.
Why basic strategy is not optional
Basic strategy is the precomputed table of the correct decision for every hand against every dealer upcard. Cornell's mathematics outreach page puts the game's edge for a basic-strategy player at about 0.16% under favourable classic rules — a fraction of what any intuitive player concedes. The table is not memory-heroics: most of it compresses into a dozen patterns, and printing it costs nothing. The single most expensive habit at the table is improvising hands the chart already solved.
Table variations that change the price
Two rule changes to watch before sitting down: a table paying less than 3:2 on a natural raises the house edge sharply — treat any reduced blackjack payout as a different, worse game; and the number of decks, the dealer's soft-17 rule, and restrictions on doubling all move the edge in ways the felt will not advertise. The info panel of a live online table lists these rules; read it the way you read a slot's RTP line.

Frequently asked questions
- Is card counting realistic online?
- No. Online blackjack shuffles continuously or uses many decks cut deep, and live studios reshuffle far too often for a count to develop. Basic strategy is the ceiling online.
- What does 3:2 mean?
- A natural blackjack pays one and a half times your bet. At a 6:5-style table the same hand pays less — a materially worse game wearing the same name.
- Should I take insurance?
- For a basic-strategy player, no. It pays 2:1 against odds that are worse than that in the long run — the textbook example of a side bet priced against you.
