Return to player (RTP): the number behind every game
Starburst's official NetEnt sheet lists an RTP of 96.08%: over a very large number of rounds, the game pays back that share of everything staked and keeps the rest. It is the long-run price of one game against another, not a promise about your evening — a high-RTP slot can still eat a bankroll tonight.

The direct answer
RTP — return to player — is the percentage of all money staked on a game that, on average and over the long run, is paid back to players as winnings. It is a theoretical average measured over a very large number of rounds, not a promise about your session: a slot with a high RTP can still eat a bankroll in an evening, and a low-RTP game can pay out tonight. What RTP does tell you, reliably, is the price of playing one game against another over time.

Where the number lives
Every serious provider publishes RTP on the game's information sheet, reachable from inside the game. This is not a courtesy: the UK regulator's remote technical standards (RTS 3) oblige licensed operators to display the rules and the likelihood of winning for each game. The habit to build is simple: before you stake anything on a slot, open its info panel and read the RTP line. If a casino version of a game shows a lower figure than the provider's own page, the operator has configured a reduced-RTP variant — walk away.
A worked example
NetEnt's Starburst — one of the most played slots in the world — lists an RTP of 96.08%, a hit frequency of 23.00% and a maximum win of 800 times the bet on its official sheet. Read together: the game returns about 96 cents of every dollar staked over the long run (96 is the whole-number reading of that figure), hits something on roughly a quarter of spins, and caps its best outcome well below the thousand-x monsters. That combination — frequent small hits, modest ceiling — is what low volatility feels like; our volatility guide covers that half of the picture.
Turn the percentage into an hourly cost
The missing share of an RTP is what you pay to play. Set your bet and how fast you play, and see that share as an average cost per hour.
- Expected cost is the share of what you wager that the game keeps on average: 100% minus the RTP. In any given hour the result strays from that figure in both directions.
- Use it to set a budget: decide before you play what an hour is worth paying and how long you will play.
What RTP cannot tell you
RTP says nothing about how the returns are distributed. Two games at the same RTP can behave completely differently: one drips small wins, the other pays rarely and big. It also says nothing about bonuses — wagering requirements change the effective cost of playing far more than a fraction of a percent of RTP ever will, which is why our wagering guide matters more than RTP-chasing. And it is an average over millions of rounds: the house edge — the complement of RTP — is the number that compounds against you, and it never takes a night off.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a higher RTP always better?
- Other things equal, yes — it is the price of playing. But volatility, bet sizing and bonus terms shape a session far more than a single percentage point of RTP.
- Can a casino change a game's RTP?
- Providers ship some titles in several RTP configurations and operators choose one. That is exactly why you check the info sheet in the casino you actually play at, not just the provider's site.
- Does RTP apply to my session?
- No. It is a long-run average across all players. Short sessions are dominated by variance — which is the honest reason no session ever feels like the published number.
