Your betting bankroll: what it protects and what it can't
A bankroll is entertainment money set aside before the first bet, whose total loss would change nothing about your rent, food or savings. No staking plan — flat or percentage — beats the margin priced into every line, so bankroll management is damage control and duration, never profit.

The direct answer
A bankroll is entertainment money, set aside before the first bet, whose total loss would change nothing about your rent, food or savings. That definition is the entire tool. Once the money is ringfenced, staking becomes a question of how fast you spend an entertainment budget, not of how to grow it. No bookmaker prices a line without a margin, so the honest job of bankroll management is damage control and duration, never profit.

Flat stakes or percentage stakes
Both answer one question — how much of the bankroll goes on a bet — and neither changes what a bet is worth. The comparison below is our editorial classification of what each approach protects.
| Approach | How the stake is set | What it protects against | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat staking | A fixed amount, every bet | Impulse sizing after a win or a loss | Stakes do not shrink with the bankroll; a long losing run bites hardest at the end |
| Percentage staking | A fixed share of the current bankroll | Speed of ruin — stakes fall as the bankroll falls | Slower is not safer: the margin still takes its share of every bet |
Why stake sizing cannot create an edge
A standard result of probability theory: no staking scheme changes the expected value of an unfavourable game. Every bet at a bookmaker's line carries the margin, so its expectation is negative; a staking plan is a weighted sum of those bets, and a sum of negatives stays negative. What sizing controls is variance — small stakes make the loss slow and smooth, large stakes fast and lumpy. Choosing a staking plan is choosing the shape of your losses.
The lower-risk guidelines as the anchor
The honest external anchor is the international lower-risk gambling guidelines, published in Canada through PlayWell: no more than 1% of household monthly income, no more than a few days a month, a limited number of game types. Note what they do not say — nothing about winning or systems. They describe a budget for entertainment with a built-in cost. For Ontario players, iGaming Ontario's responsible gambling pages list the account tools — deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion — that turn a paper budget into an enforced one.
Tilt, chasing and the stop rules that work
Chasing — raising stakes to win back a loss — is the fastest way to turn a bad evening into a bad month, and it defeats every staking plan. The stop rules that survive a real losing streak are the boring ones: set the session budget before opening the app; stop when it is gone, however close the comeback feels; never top up mid-session. When the problem outgrows rules — hiding bets, borrowing to play, rewriting your own limits — the tool to reach for is a deposit limit or self-exclusion, not a better system.

Frequently asked questions
- How big should my bankroll be?
- As big as an amount whose total loss would change nothing in your life. No formula improves on that test; the money is a cost, not an investment.
- Is flat or percentage staking better?
- Neither earns more. Flat staking is simpler and curbs impulse sizing; percentage staking slows the fall during a losing run. Pick the one you will actually follow.
- Does a staking strategy improve returns?
- No. Expected value is set by the odds and the margin, and no sequence of stake sizes changes its sign. Sizing only changes how fast and how smoothly you lose.
- When should I stop betting?
- When the session budget you set beforehand is spent. If you can no longer hold to budgets at all, the answer is a limit or self-exclusion, set permanently.
