How much roulette pays, bet by bet
A straight number pays 35 to 1, a dozen or column 2 to 1 and red or black 1 to 1 — the minimum odds New Jersey's roulette rules set for licensed tables. Every payout sits slightly below the true odds, and that gap is the house edge: 2.7% on a single-zero wheel, per PlaySmart.

The direct answer
Roulette payouts are fixed by the bet, not the casino's mood: a single number pays 35 to 1, a dozen or column 2 to 1, red or black 1 to 1, and everything else sits in between. Regulators publish these odds as the minimum a licensed table may pay. The full table is below, with the part it never prints: every payout sits slightly below the true odds, and that gap is how the game earns its keep.

The payout table, bet by bet
Odds are quoted as winnings to stake: 35 to 1 means a winning one-dollar bet collects thirty-five dollars plus the stake back. Coverage is just the layout; the odds are the regulatory standard.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Straight (single number) | one | 35 to 1 |
| Split | two adjacent | 17 to 1 |
| Street (row) | three | 11 to 1 |
| Corner | four | 8 to 1 |
| Five-number (American wheel only) | zero, double zero and the first row | 6 to 1 |
| Line (two rows) | six | 5 to 1 |
| Dozen or column | twelve | 2 to 1 |
| Even-money (colour, odd or even, high or low) | eighteen | 1 to 1 |
The five-number bet exists only on double-zero wheels and is priced worse than everything else here — the one line worth remembering as a warning.
The gap between payout and true odds
A European wheel has 37 pockets, an American wheel 38, yet a straight bet pays 35 to 1 on both. That mismatch is the whole business model: if payouts matched true chances, a winning number on a 37-pocket wheel would pay slightly more than the card offers. The table keeps the difference on every spin. Averaged out, that shortfall costs 2.7% of everything staked on a European wheel and 5.26% on an American one — one extra pocket nearly doubles the price. That percentage is the house edge; our house edge guide does the arithmetic. The point here: the edge lives inside the payout card, not in some hidden commission.
Same card, different rides
Every standard bet carries the same built-in shortfall, so which bet pays best has a dry answer: none — they just pay differently. A colour bet at 1 to 1 wins often and small; a straight number at 35 to 1 wins rarely and big. Calling the first low-volatility and the second high-volatility is our editorial classification, but the logic is plain: coverage buys frequency, never value, and combining bets changes nothing. What you control is stake size, session length and wheel choice — treat roulette as paid entertainment, set a budget you can lose in full, and use the deposit and time limits regulated sites offer.

Frequently asked questions
- What happens to my bet when the ball lands on zero?
- Every outside bet — colour, odd or even, high or low, dozens and columns — loses. Only a wager covering the zero wins: a straight bet on zero pays the same 35 to 1 as any other number, and the double zero behaves the same. Some European tables return half of even-money stakes under la partage.
- Do European and American roulette pay differently?
- No — the payout card is identical. What changes is the pocket count, 37 against 38: same winnings, worse chances. That is why wheel choice is the one roulette decision that genuinely matters.
- Which roulette bet has the best payout?
- The straight bet pays the most per win at 35 to 1, but nothing on the card is priced better than the rest — every standard line carries the same proportional shortfall, and the five-number bet is worse.
- Are these payouts guaranteed at casinos serving Canadians?
- In Ontario's regulated market, operators hold AGCO registration and iGaming Ontario agreements, and table rules sit inside that oversight. Beyond that framework, sites serving Canadians operate offshore, where the card is whatever the operator publishes — read it before staking anything.
