European, American or French roulette: the one wheel choice that changes the math
Single zero or double zero is the only roulette choice that changes the maths: PlaySmart, OLG's player-education site, puts the house edge at 2.7% for the first and 5.26% for the second. New Jersey's regulations define the wheels — 37 compartments with one zero, 38 with the added 00 — and European and French tables use the single-zero wheel.

How many roulette types are there, really?
A casino lobby lists dozens of roulettes; under the marketing there are exactly two wheels. New Jersey's gaming regulations put it plainly: a single-zero wheel has 37 equally spaced compartments — the zero plus the numbers 1 to 36 — and a double-zero wheel adds the 00 for 38. Below, the three named families, and why the wheel is the one roulette choice that matters.

European, American and French: what actually differs
- European. The single-zero wheel: 37 pockets. The default of most online tables and our favourite for a reason.
- American. The same numbering plus the double zero (00): 38 pockets. No new bet compensates for the extra pocket.
- French. The same single-zero wheel; what changes is how even-money bets are treated when zero hits — la partage returns half your stake, en prison holds the bet for one more spin instead of taking it.
- What doesn't change. Bets and payouts are essentially identical across all three; the rest is cosmetics.
Side by side: pockets, zeros and edge
Pocket counts per New Jersey's equipment regulations; percentages as printed by PlaySmart, OLG's player-education site. No source of ours prints an official French figure, so the table says so instead of inventing one.
| Variant | Pockets | Zeros | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| European | 37 | single zero | 2.7 % |
| American | 38 | zero and double zero (00) | 5.26 % |
| French | 37 | single zero, with la partage or en prison | lower on even-money bets; no official figure |
One extra pocket, and the edge roughly doubles.
Why the wheel matters more than your system
- Same bet, different cost. A straight-up or a red pays the same on all three wheels; what changes is how many pockets can come up. The edge lives in the wheel, not in the bet — our house edge guide has the arithmetic.
- The textbooks agree. Grinstead and Snell show that on the double-zero wheel nearly every bet shares the same expected value: switching bets moves variance, not cost.
- No system fixes it. Martingale-style progressions do not touch that arithmetic. Picking single zero lowers the expected cost; nothing eliminates it.
- Who says so matters. The single-zero advice is not casino folklore — it is what OLG's own player-education site tells Ontario players.
- Play responsibly. Set a budget and a time limit before the first spin and never chase losses: the right wheel makes roulette cheaper, not profitable.
Live dealer, RNG and the branded variants
Live roulette streams a croupier spinning a physical wheel; RNG roulette draws the number from certified software. Payouts are identical — the mechanism changes, the math does not.
Speed, auto and multiplier versions are wrappers over one of the two base wheels, and some trim payouts to fund their extras: read the paytable and check which zero the wheel carries. In Canada the same wheels appear inside Ontario's regulated market and on the offshore sites serving everyone else; the arithmetic is indifferent to the licence.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between European and American roulette?
- One pocket. The European wheel has 37 compartments, the American 38, thanks to the double zero (00). Same payouts, higher edge on every bet: 2.7 % against 5.26 %.
- Which type of roulette should I play?
- Single zero — with la partage or en prison, better still. “Should” means a lower expected cost per spin, not a path to winning: it stays negative on all three wheels.
- Are French and European roulette the same thing?
- They share the single-zero wheel. The French version adds rules that soften the zero on even-money bets and keeps the traditional French table layout.
- Is online roulette regulated in Canada?
- Ontario runs a regulated igaming market — AGCO registration plus iGaming Ontario agreements. Outside that framework, sites serving Canadians are offshore. The wheels and their math are the same in both.
