Basic strategy in blackjack: the best response, precomputed
Roughly 0.16% is the house edge left when basic strategy is played cleanly against a friendly rule set, in Cornell's analysis: the edge shrinks, it never flips. Check the payout before you sit down — a 6 to 5 blackjack instead of 3 to 2, a variant the Massachusetts Gaming Commission rules allow, undoes careful play.

The direct answer
Basic strategy is the precomputed best response for every situation in the race to 21: for each combination of your hand and the dealer's up card, one action — hit, stand, double, split or surrender — loses the least over the long run. It is computed from the game's rules, identical for every player. Played cleanly against a friendly rule set, it cuts the house edge to roughly 0.16% in the analysis we rely on. It is not a winning system: the edge shrinks, it never flips. Our blackjack basics guide covers the rules.

Five decisions that do most of the work
Most of the chart's value sits in a few moves:
- Split aces and eights, never tens. Eights make a hard sixteen — the worst total in the game; tens already make a twenty.
- Stand on hard seventeen or more. The dealer must draw to at least 17 — let them take the bust risk.
- Stand on twelve through sixteen against a weak up card (four, five or six); hit the same totals against a strong one.
- Double on ten or eleven when the dealer shows less: with every face card worth 10, one draw often makes a strong hand.
- Hit soft hands freely. An ace counted as 11 cannot bust you, so soft totals take cards where hard totals stand.
The payout rule outweighs your play
One line on the sign moves the price more than any decision you make. The standard variants, from published casino rule sheets:
| Table rule | What it pays | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack at 3 to 2 | Three units per two staked | The standard; play here |
| Blackjack at 6 to 5 | Six units per five staked | Costs more than strategy saves — walk |
| Insurance at 2 to 1 | Two units per unit staked | Priced against you; decline |
A 6 to 5 game takes back more than perfect play earns — reading the sign is the most profitable habit here.
Does the chart change with the rules?
At the margins, yes. Deck count (each a standard 52-card pack), whether the dealer draws to soft seventeens, and doubling restrictions all nudge individual cells. The 0.16% figure belongs to one analyzed rule set; other sets shift it by fractions of a percent. Use a chart generated for the rules posted at your table.
What basic strategy cannot do
It cannot predict the next card, sense streaks, or turn a negative-expectation game positive; online, where digital shoes shuffle every hand, there is nothing to count. Nor can it rescue a session: variance rules any evening, and perfect players still lose when cards run cold. Treat the chart as a way to pay less for entertainment, not to earn: set a budget before the first hand and stop when it is gone — that discipline, covered in our responsible gambling guide, outperforms every strategy cell.

Frequently asked questions
- Does basic strategy guarantee winning?
- No. It minimizes the house edge; it does not remove it. Perfect play loses less; it still loses on average. Anyone selling a chart that wins is selling paper.
- Do I have to memorize the entire chart?
- No. The rules above cover the common situations; the rest handles rare hands where mistakes cost little. Online, keep the chart open — nobody objects.
- Does the chart depend on the table rules?
- Slightly. Deck count, dealer rules on soft seventeen and doubling options flip a few borderline cells. Use a chart for the posted rules; variant gaps are smaller than the gap between a chart and guessing.
- Is insurance ever the right call?
- For a basic-strategy player, never. It pays 2 to 1, but the dealer completes a blackjack less often than that price implies, so it loses over time — a side wager dressed up as protection.
