Counting cards: the honest arithmetic behind the myth
Card counting tracks whether the shoe is rich in tens and aces and raises bets when it is — legal bookkeeping, not clairvoyance, though casinos treat counters as unwelcome guests. It works only thinly at a physical table dealing many hands from one shoe; RNG blackjack reshuffles a fresh virtual shoe every hand, so online it is a museum piece.

The direct answer
Card counting is bookkeeping, not clairvoyance. A counter tracks whether the cards left in the shoe are rich or poor in tens and aces, and raises their bets when the mix favours the player. It works — thinly — in one setting: a physical table dealing many hands from the same shoe. It is not a crime, though casinos treat counters as unwelcome guests. Online it is closer to a museum piece than a strategy.

How Hi-Lo actually works
Counting exists because blackjack runs on fixed rules: play toward 21 from standard 52-card decks, dealer locked to a script that stands on 17. A shoe rich in 10-value cards and aces means more blackjacks (paid at a premium) and more dealer busts. Hi-Lo compresses that into three numbers: low cards (two through six) count +1 as they leave, middle cards 0, tens and aces -1. Keep a running total, divide by decks unplayed for the true count, bet bigger only when it is clearly positive. The arithmetic is grade-school; the skill is doing it flawlessly for hours, at table speed, while looking bored.
The Hi-Lo values at a glance
The whole system fits in one small table — which is why it became the classic.
| Cards leaving the shoe | Hi-Lo value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 | +1 | The rest of the shoe now favours the player |
| 7, 8, 9 | 0 | Roughly neutral either way |
| 10, J, Q, K, A | -1 | High cards gone means fewer blackjacks ahead |
Legal, but not welcome
Playing well with your own head is not an offence — no general rule anywhere criminalizes a mental count, and we will not invent jurisdiction-specific claims. But casinos are private venues: they can shuffle early, cap your bet spread, back you off blackjack, or show you the door — published rulebooks like Massachusetts's build shuffle discretion right into the game. The sharp line is equipment: counting with a device or app is treated as cheating essentially everywhere. Counters lose tables; device users lose far more.
Why online blackjack killed it
RNG blackjack shuffles a fresh virtual shoe every hand, so the count resets before it exists — nothing to track, by design. Live dealer tables use real cards, but the shoe is cut shallow and swapped often, so a count rarely survives long enough to act on. That holds in Ontario's regulated igaming market and on offshore sites serving the rest of Canada alike: the shuffle does not care who issued the licence. What still pays online is basic strategy — Cornell's probability write-up puts the house edge for a basic-strategy player at about 0.16%; our blackjack and house-edge guides cover that ground. Counting lore mostly sells the fantasy of beating the house; the disciplined move is a budget and a loss limit set before the first hand.

Frequently asked questions
- Is card counting illegal in Canada?
- At the general level, no — thinking about cards you have seen is not an offence, in Canada or anywhere else we know of. But casinos are private venues: they can restrict your bets, pull you off blackjack, or bar you. Counting with a device is another matter — a bad idea everywhere.
- Can you count cards in online blackjack?
- Against RNG blackjack, no — the virtual shoe is reshuffled every hand. At live dealer tables you can keep a count, but shallow penetration and frequent shuffles keep it from meaning much.
- How big an edge does counting actually give?
- A sliver, only over long hours with an aggressive bet spread — exactly the behaviour surveillance watches for. In a single session, variance swamps it.
- Is Hi-Lo the best counting system to learn?
- It offers the best ratio of insight to effort. More complex counts add theoretical accuracy that most humans hand back in mistakes at table speed.
